Boy visiting dentists - unwanted oral habits

Tackling Unconscious Behaviours

There is a range of habits which are considered to be undesirable in regards to dentistry. They are harmless enough in isolation, but continuing to engage in one of these habits can eventually lead to damage to the teeth and expensive dental treatment further down the line.

Habits that can be treated with Hypnosis

  • Thumb sucking
  • Nail biting
  • Tongue Thrusting
  • Mouth Breathing
  • Smoking

Hypnotherapy to break habits

Habits such as those listed above are played out unconsciously. Often the patient is not aware they are engaging in the habit until they either catch themselves in the act or it is pointed out to them. Trying to break a habit consciously with willpower alone can be incredibly difficult. However, with hypnotherapy and the use of suggestion, changes can be made at the unconscious level for quick and lifelong change.

All habits are patterns that serve a purpose, that is to say, that they have a positive intention behind them initially. A patient that sucks their thumb for example may have done so from an early age to deal with certain emotions and continues to use that pattern into their adult life.

With hypnosis, the behavioural patterns can be interrupted and new empowering habits/behaviours can be instilled into the patient. These new behaviours meet the needs that the patient requires them too but without the damaging side effects they once brought.

Often, simply teaching patients how to relax is enough to reduce stress and eliminate unwanted habits.
